Where We Started: The Vision of Peter Garthwaite

Founded by Peter Garthwaite, the company started as a small operation with a big purpose: to offer York County residents a fuel provider they could count on. Under Peter’s leadership for over 20 years, Garthwaite Energy was built on key principles that still guide us today:

  • Integrity
  • Honor
  • Intelligence
  • Dedication
  • Competence

These weren’t just Peter’s values—they became our company culture. And even now, those same principles shape the way we approach every delivery, every service call, and every customer relationship.

A New Chapter: Growth Through Leadership

In 2013, Tom Carey stepped into ownership, bringing with him over 35 years of hands-on industry experience in heating oil and propane. Under his leadership, Garthwaite Energy expanded dramatically—quadrupling in size while keeping our commitment to personalized service and competitive pricing firmly intact.

Tom brought more than business acumen—he brought heart. He introduced a guiding philosophy to the company that quickly became part of our DNA: FDR.

Fair, Decent, and Reasonable. That’s how we treat our customers, our employees, and our business partners—100% of the time.”

Whether it’s a new hire or a longtime technician, you’ll hear Tom reminding the team:

“Treat customers the way you’d want your mother to be treated.”

It’s not just a saying. It’s how we do business.

Real People, Real Service—With Compassion and Common Sense

We know life isn’t always simple. People miss deadlines. Furnaces break the night before a snowstorm. Fuel bills show up the same week as college tuition.

That’s why we’re more than just a service provider—we’re a partner. As a locally owned business, we have the flexibility and empathy to work with our customers through tough times. We value loyalty, and when you've been with us for years, we treat you like family.

As Tom Carey says:

“We understand the world isn’t perfect. That’s why we respond with fairness—especially to the customers who’ve been with us through the years.”

Our Winning Formula Hasn’t Changed

From our first fuel drop to our latest HVAC installation, our secret to success has always been simple:

  • Hard Work
  • Fair Prices
  • Outstanding Quality
  • Satisfaction Guaranteed

We’re proud of our history—but even more excited about the future. As we continue to grow, we’re staying true to the values that made us who we are.
